Almut Köhler studierte Tiermedizin an der Freien Universität Berlin und an der Tierärztlichen Hochschule Hannover. Nach Abschluss des Studiums (1996) promovierte sie bis 2000 an der Bundesforschungsanstalt für Tierzucht und Tierverhalten (heute Friedrich-Löffler-Institut) unter Prof. Dr. Franz Ellendorff und Dr. Roland Grossmann zu dem Thema „Molekularbiologische Untersuchungen der Genexpression der Nonapeptid-Hormone Mesotocin und Arginin-Vasotocin beim Huhn“.
Seit 2002 arbeitet sie an der Universität Karlsruhe in der molekularen Entwicklungs- und Zellphysiologie an der Funktion von Adhäsionsmolekülen in der Augen- und Neuralleistenzell-Entwicklung.

Almut Köhler ist seit Juni 2008 als WIN-Kollegiatin im Projekt "Prinzipien der Entwicklung und Formgebung in der Biologie" tätig.
